I couldn’t be more excited to tell you about what just released! My very first enamel pin!
A little while back Style Over Substance (@sty_over_sub on IG) reached out and asked if I’d be interested in designing a custom pin based on a movie. I’d honestly never created one and it had been something I’d intended to look into for quite some time. So I said, sure, as soon as I figure out how to use this drawing tablet I just picked up, lol.
After a little while I got a handle on it and we discussed potential candidates for the design. As soon as Starship Troopers was mentioned I leapt at the idea. I’m a long-time fan of the films and the original author, Robert A. Heinlein. I’ve sketched up the Arachnids a few times and thought of a scene immediately.
During the original movie there are sequences that act like news bulletins and they always end the segments with, “Would You Like To Know More?”. During one, there’s a captured Arachnid in a containment unit with a glass wall. They send in some livestock to feed it and things get… Messy. You don’t actually see anything but the splatter because they add a censor bar to hide the gory stuff. It’s one of the scenes from the movie that always sticks with me. The others being when Rico and crew put their arms together to show off their Death From Above tattoos and another one of those propaganda sequences where all these children are stomping on cockroaches.
The movie has a lot of powerful imagery. I recommend it if you haven’t seen it and recommend reading the book that “inspired” it even more. As a former member of the military, Heinlein has some interesting views on war. It gets you thinking.
Fast forward some months later and the design is almost coming up in the queue, and I’m asked if I know Azog, from the Hobbit movie. Ah, yes. Can I design a sticker of him? Ah, most definitely! I’ve been designing a lot of Monster stickerheads lately, so it was a snap to switch gears to the big bad Orc hunting Bilbo and crew. Then I find out it debuted at the Style Over Substance table at DesignerCon 2022!
It’s been a wonderful experience working with a top quality company that puts a lot of care into products they’re a real fan of too.
So why not head over to https://styleoversubstance.bigcartel.com/ and order yourself one of these pins? It’s $13+ S&H and you get two bonus Mobile Infantry inspired stickers. And while you’re there grab yourself an Azog the Defiler stickerhead to add to your collection!

Don’t sleep on this, folks!
