There was an awful lot of testosterone in the sketch covers included in the raffle, how fitting that I finish the print of Spider-Woman in the red suit (a variation on Julia Carpenter’s Black Suit) on International Women’s Day.

The casting rumors of Madame Web inspired me to draw up a quick sketch of Julia Carpenter, who took over as the Spider family story weaver after the death of the original. Plus, she’s a strong female character that is incredibly under-utilised after her brief solo series, and I wanted to add another Spider character to the raffle package. Who better than one of the women who nearly beat Spider-Man to a bloody pulp? Since her black suit is rumored to have been an influence on the Spider-Man suit design that would become Venom, I figured why not go back to the original red of Jessica Drew’s suit? And while I was at it I could give it a slick, almost symbiote, look.

From Freedom Force to Avengers West Coast (Yay!) Julia Carpenter, mother and hero, shows that behind every masculine hero in the spotlight, is a strong woman who doesn’t ask for the credit she deserves and rarely gets. Secret Wars, Civil Wars, and Spider Islands she was there kicking ass and taking names all while raising a daughter as, more often than not, a single mother.
